Portrait of Jeremy, creator of My Professional Pal

Hey there, I’m Jeremy – I’ve been working as a business professional in tax for the past 4 and a half years. When I graduated from university with a Commerce/Law degree, with a graduate position at a big 4 professional services firm in the bag, I thought that I would be set for a life of success and freedom, where I could make a real difference in the world and do what I love every day.

Well, a few months into my new role, I soon discovered that…

I was wrong.

In my complete ignorance and naïveté, I stumbled through my first couple of years, making plenty of embarrassing and cringe-worthy mistakes along the way. Some of these were so shocking that I was genuinely worried about losing my job on the spot. I also struggled and buckled under the sheer amount of things to be done and needing to put out blazing fires, only for something else to blow up and take their place. I was so overwhelmed thinking about all the things I needed to learn and had no clue about how to keep progressing in my career.

I faced multiple bouts of burn-out, where I lay awake at night, wondering what I was doing with my life and waking up with dread and resignation pooling deep within my soul. Every time, I would recover, but soon to fall back into those treacherous pits of despair once again.

In the face of this situation, I did the only thing that I felt was the right thing to do.

I faced it head-on.

I picked myself up and told myself that I’d stop being the victim from then on. I accepted my fears, my insecurities and my weaknesses. From then on, I would be better. I owned my work, my career and my life. I reflected and realised what deeply matters to me, and committed to staying true to myself and my values. I sought feedback and advice from others and devoured all the books, podcasts and content on how to take back control and become a more productive, passionate and proactive person.

And whilst it might seem like I’ve been blowing my own trumpet just now, I’m just like you. I’m a little (4′ 11″) man in a big wide world, trying to craft a career and build a life that truly brings me joy. I want to be able to use my unique skills and abilities to make a difference to the wider community. I’d love to be able to look back at my life one day and truly say, “Man, that was good.”

And I’m sure you do too.

As I look back through the past, I see the version of me back then and facepalm, because I was so stupid and dumb. If only I had known better, I wouldn’t have thought, said or done those things. I might have had an easier time when I started out my career. I would’ve had a better idea of what I was doing and how I can keep growing and progressing in my career. I wish there was someone or something that would have been there to give me specific advice every step along the way.

And that’s what I want to do for you.

If you can relate to any part of my story,, I’m here for you. I want to share all the tips, tricks, strategies and secrets to thriving as a career professional and having a life while doing it.
